Do Your Flower Vases Measure Up?

Image
We wondered what flowers would look like in our wonderful vintage style measuring jars with their fabulous-fifties-feel and the result was simply glorious. These recycled glass, American designed, but Italian made, measures are the perfect addition to any kitchen; whether modern or old-school. The easy to grip hexagonal shape has easy to read measurements on each of its six sides in imperial, metric and cups; making it so simple for you if you are following either British, European or American recipes – or swapping between all three. Millilitres, fluid ounces and cups are clearly marked, as well as well as measurements for those often used ingredients; flour, sugar and rice. Moreover with its impression 700 ml capacity it is the perfect receptacle in which to mix your favourite cocktail. Making it all that more effortless with its non drip spout. 25 x 10 cm Matching vintage style utensil jar

Summer Cocktails

Image
Cocktails are an essential part of any summer social gathering but forget the clichéd Cosmos and the been-there Bellinis; us style-savvy South Londoners know a thing or three about creating the perfect, über-cool cocktail party. Moreover, who wants to mess around mixing messy different drinks? Give everyone the same aperitif when they arrive and sip back and enjoy. Chez Roullier White Martinis are the mot de jour and they require require just two ingredients. Today a classic Martini is three-parts gin to one-part vermouth. The dryer the Martini the greater the gin to vermouth ratio. Aficionados of a truly Dry Martini will just coat the inside of the glass with vermouth. Mix your ingredients in a tall glass with ice (a Martini should always be stirred not shaken as this will allow too much air into the mix) strain and serve. The key is not to allow any water into your mix so use large ice cubes and as they start to melt, drain them. A Martini must always be served with an olive and you ...

Friends of Peckham Rye Summer Fete 4th September

Image
The Friends of Peckham Rye's Annual fete will be on Saturday the 4th of September from 12 noon till 5pm. The fete is organised by members of the committee but we do need lots of extra helpers on the day, to help out on some of the stalls, with the tea tent and with other varied general duties. If you can spare any time to volunteer on the day please contact FOPRP@aol.com or contact one of the appropriate committee members as detailed below. We also need additional items for the following stalls: BOOKS PLANTS – Calling all budding gardeners – if you can pot up seedlings or plants from the garden to sell on the plant stall please leave outside 3 Elland Road, SE15. CAKES – Home made cakes are extremely popular at our tea tent, so anyone who enjoys baking please bake a cake, cookies or jam tarts, whatever you prefer and bring along on the day for the tea and cake marquee. Remember that of all the events held on Peckham Rye Common this is the only one organised by the residents for the...

Calling Unsigned Singer Songwriters

Image
Roullier White has always championed the work of talented, singer songwriters; our small selection of CDs was the most sought after in the area, receiving rave reviews from music critics on the Guardian, Time Out and many other publications; becoming a destination for those with an interest in the more obscure. With the advent of downloading it was no longer viable to sell CDs of this nature. If you are an unsigned artist, performing your own, unpublished work we would like to hear from you. If you material is of a mellow nature, conducive to that of a relaxed shopping environment we will happily play your work. If you have produced your own CD we will also retail your material on your behalf. We produce a weekly playlist of the tracks we are playing, to which you will be added. We would particularly like to hear from you if you are local. Please email Alexander Rathbone Remember you must be unsigned and performing your own unpublished material, otherwise this is a breach of copyrigh...

Gaz-patchy: My Lost-in-Translation Gazpacho Recipe

Image
I do not speak Spanish and, as I discovered to my disadvantage many years ago, it is a useful skill to possess in Spain. Whilst I was in my late teens we went to stay in the Catalonian, seaside fishing town of L’Escala. We arrived late at night and I sought directions from a local bar to the ‘sea’ to take a refreshing, moonlit dip. We were surprised to see that rather than the sandy beaches we were expecting, the rocky outcrop on which the old town sat was instead surrounded by a series of craggy coves. We found the least stony bay and that became our destination for the next 5 days. We were often surprised by the reaction we got from locals when we climbed up the jagged cliff after an uncomfortable day’s sunbathing. On our last night we decided to check out a particular restaurant. Needless to say I misinterpreted the directions and we wandered way off track. Ironically just far enough to discover that around the corner from the headland was a glorious stretch of golden sand. Many les...

Hectic Host: Summer Salads and the Best G&Ts Ever!

Image
The last thing one wants to do on a hot summer's day is slave over a hot oven. Summer food is all about assembling rather than cooking. Here are a few of my favourite and speedy recipes, designed to keep everything on the down-low. The first flat that we bought was in the superbly named Mundania Court, an Art Deco block in East Dulwich, at the time the home of the British Bakelite Museum and opposite the cemetery where Entertaining Mr Sloane was filmed. The building was far from mundane; inside the flats are arranged around a central courtyard, we would all leave our front doors open and neighbours were forever popping in and out of each others homes. One summer a somewhat annoying woman took to turning up just before dinner (Mundania Caught – see what we did there?) I would of course ask her to join us. She would dive into the huge salad I had made and say the same thing every evening 'I am sorry, I've taken all the good bits.' So...
