Saturday Shopping - East Dulwich Pit Stops

Image
A day’s shopping in East Dulwich can be exhausting with all the truly amazing shops and stalls one needs to take in to benefit from the complete experience. The key is to pace yourself. Keep fuelled and hydrated and plan for plenty of pit stops. Here’s my guide to making your most of a day in glorious SE22 - if I have missed out your favourite, do let me know. Start with an energising juice drink from Chris’s Pretty Traditional on North Cross Road. Pop next door to Pretty Vintage for a hearty full English or try the Eggs Benedict at the Duck Egg Café or a veg monty in the newly reopened Blue Mountain Café. For a mid morning coffee break stop at Franklin’s Farm Shop where you can also feast your eyes on the glorious array of unusual and exquisite food items and pass the time of day with Rod and Tim or Captured on the Rye – where you can shop Lorraine and Lol’s wonderful screen printed Peckham made fashion and homewares from the comfort of your chair. If you are lucky, dependin

NEW IN: 'The Sexiest Scent On The Planet Ever' & More From 4160 Tuesdays

Image
If we live until we're 80, we have 4160 Tuesdays . That's all. Let's not waste them'. This is the striking phrase that helped provide the name for Sarah McCartney's fantastic and highly personal range of perfumes. Driven by fascination and mindful observation, 4160 Tuesdays is the fruit of tireless exploration, with each scent being shaped by the perfumer's everyday encounters, fond memories, friendships and relationships.  We're delighted to stock six of these wonderful scents, four of which are exclusive to Roullier White.  Invisible Ben - Eau de Parfum - 100ml: Sarah gifted this custom-made scent to her friend on his 40th birthday, only to discover his distaste for fragrances of any kind; he simply wished to smell invisible at all times. Sandalwood, benzoin, musk and wood, in addition to one of Sarah's favourite ingredients: opoponax. Says Alice - Eau de Parfum - 100ml: Named after a poem by English author AA Milne, Says Alice

My Last Good Buy: GreenPan

Image
Just part of my beloved GreenPan collection There are advantages and disadvantages to being a buyer, one of the disadvantages is a compulsion to turn every plate and bowl over in every restaurant or home I visit to check where it is made. The advantages are I can name a wine glass manufacturer from the glass’s silhouette and tell you the make of casserole from the shape of the lid. When friends started asking me what brand of saucepans are currently being used in the Great British Bake Off that was my easiest challenge yet. Easily identifiable from their elegant grey lining I have been using GreenPans for several years.  When I learned how damaging traditional non-stick pans are to your health (the Teflon website advises you not to use their pans in rooms with a caged bird present due to gases which are emitted during cooking and Teflon also flakes off in your food, yuck!) and how poor they are at performing the job at hand (traditional non-stick services are simply not good

Today I Will Be Wearing: Frederic Malle’s Geranium Pour Monsieur

Image
Today I Will Be Wearing: Frederic Malle’s Geranium Pour Monsieur  After a weekend of rain and a glimpse of blue sky this morning I wanted a fragrance to put a little spring in my step and a smile on my face. Frederic Malle’s Geranium Pour Monsieur is uplifting and upbeat, fresh and perky, just what you need on a Monday morning.  Whilst the listed supportive ingredients are warm, spicy notes (aniseed, clove and cinnamon, sandalwood, white musk, incense resinoïd, styrax benzoin) the top and enduring notes are clean, green geranium and mint. It is one of those scents you spray onto your wrist and find yourself pressing to your nose throughout the day, eager to see how it develops and desperate for another hit of the addictive aroma.  Whilst in many cultures men embrace floral notes such as rich roses, staid British gentlemen back away from anything obviously floral, do not be put off by this fragrance’s name; it is cool, sophisticated and very, very masculine. Expect an eclectic mix of stall holders with lots of new and exciting vintage and designer collections, but above all expect the unexpected - which is what Peckham is all about.  Peckham Market will be welcoming back A Drop of Honey Dew (beautiful, beautiful  MCS (My Crazy Scrunchie) and Somnium Books and introducing new photographic and art supplies stalls to provide students with all their material needs for college. Absolutely: Perfume

Image
My inaugural perfume column in the absolutely lovely Absolutely Magazine . Absolutely Columnist Lawrence Roullier White on the art of scent… In Hollywood’s heyday it wasn’t unusual for stars to be synonymous with one particular scent. Gloria Swanson scented the set of Sunset Boulevard with Caron’s Narcisse Noir , Cary Grant spritzed Eight and Bob and Grace Kelly famously walked down the aisle - a walk that was to make her Princess of Monaco - wearing a perfume created to replicate the aroma of her wedding bouquet: Fleurissimo by Creed .  But that was then. Too often people focus on trying to find that single signature scent. My best advice? Spare yourself the struggle and start your own ‘fragrance wardrobe’. In the same way that your weekday suit should be different to the red-carpet-worthy gown you might throw on for an evening out, no one perfume should be expected to fit every occasion. For day try something light, fresh and zingy. Carthusia’s Mediterraneo is

Weekend Shopping: Herne Hill SE21

Image
With Half Moon Lane reopened Herne Hill is slowly recovering from the devastating effects of the flood. Local businesses need your support now more than ever, so make sure a trip to Herne Hill is part of your plans this weekend – there is so much to do and see.  Kindred Bakery, on Half Moon Lane, has been open throughout the crisis and others will follow, all of the other shops on Railton Road, Dulwich Road, Norwood Road are unaffected. We LOVE I Love Lowie , The Society For The Protection Of Unwanted Goods, Herne Hill Books , Gerty’s Gumballs and Louise Taylor Flowers , to name but a few.  On Saturday Oxfam is holding a drop off for donations outside the closed shop at 20 Half Moon Lane and there is the splendid Market on Railton Road on Sunday - where the Oxfam Bookshop will be putting in appearance too, as well as a a whole hosts of deli delights and arts and crafts.

My Last Good Buy: Sony Waterproof MP3 Player from Argos

Image
I adore my early morning swims at Brockwell Lido, however managing longer than half an hour can be a trial in terms of tediousness. But a little gadget, available locally from Argos for £49.99, has changed all that.  Whilst the lithe lotharios, Brixton’s bearded best, are living the dream in the fast lane, and I might well doing some granny-freestyle in the roped off section, in my head I am in Studio 54 with Debbie, Donna and Liza. With my new Sony Waterproof MP3 Player I am quite literally lost in music, this miraculous little machine with its integral battery slips in your ears, is powered for over eight hours fully charged, or you can charge it for an hour in just three minutes, and holds over 900 songs. Using plug and use software you can select tunes to upload from your digital library. It is waterproof up to 2 metres. The sound quality is great and it has a shuffle function.
