Dune London: Why A Unisex Scent Will Make You Stand Out this Spring

Image
We are thrilled to have two of our favourite brands; Nancy Meiland & Imaginary Authors included in this this lovely feature on unisex scent by Dune London. "Women's scents ... men's scents. It's a clever marketing trick - there are actually no such things. Fragrance is all dependent on the individual - you can get guys who wear rose scents with aplomb, or ladies who can pull of a traditional gentleman's fougère (lavender and oakmoss). But some of the best - and more interesting scents are the ones which can't be confined to one gender. With that in mind, we've sniffed out some hidden gems on the niche perfumery circuit." La Montaña Scented Candles

Image
"The best smelling candles I've ever come across"  -  India Knight Inspired by the aromas of a remote Valencian village, La Montaña candles magically capture the olfactory glory of a hidden mountain hamlet as it moves from dawn to dusk and summer to winter. The beautifully presented candles are expertly constructed and will enhance your home with a flood of uplifting, nuanced and evocative fragrance. We adore them. La Montaña Alfredo's Café  is a triumph of evocative perfumery. It is early evening in the village square, the doors of the church swing open and the devout leave mass. Sitting on a battered leather banquette outside Alfredo's Café the aroma of coffee, brandy and black tobacco becomes intertwined with the sweet notes of incense. £35 Discover Alfredo's Café The scent of the mountainside after a summer storm. In the background the faint freshness of the lemon and lime trees; with pummelled basil and wild

Today I'm Wearing: E. Coudray: Jacinthe et Rose

Image
'Today the weather in London is bad. I think it is time for a little Jacinthe & Rose by E. Coudray.  The perfect way to share this scent of springtime is to layer it. First a bath in the moisturising foaming bath cream, then an application of rich body cream before a spray of eau de toilette.  It is the perfect pretty antidote to a grey day and a marvelous skin care regime. Absolutely Magazine: April Issue: April Showers

Image
There is an olfactory occurrence, a scent sensation that when it is talked about everyone knows what is meant but everyone finds it impossible to describe. In nature it is the smell of the atmosphere during and after a shower, when the scent of something that should have no smell, rainwater, is everywhere. The phenomenon was studied in 1964 by two Australian scientists, Isabel Bear and Roderick Thomas. They discovered that part of what one is smelling is not rainwater at all but an oil which is held in soil and rocks, this oil is disrupted by rain and humidity and it is the tiny emissions of scent molecules from this oil that prevail in the air. They even gave it a name; petrichor. Another component of the smell of rain is geosmin, also an organic compound it has an earthy aroma and is produced by ground bacteria; prevalent in the soil it is jettisoned into the air by falling raindrops. We are strangely susceptive to the smell of geosmin, the human nose can detect the tiniest

Mail on Sunday: You Magazine: Beauty Buzz: DS & Durga: Burning Barbershop

Image
We are excited to see DS & Durga  - with one of our absolute favourite scents; Burning Barbershop - was in You Magazine this weekend.  This is what Bella Blissett says:  "It’s no wonder the perfume cognoscenti are aflutter over DS & Durga, a brand that uses scent to tell tales of American legends and disasters. Inspired by a fire that broke out in a New York salon in 1891, Burning Barbershop bottles the aroma of the spearmint, lime and lavender shaving tonics that were set ablaze. £98, roullierwhite.com ." DJ Shadow: The Mountain Will Fall: The Mountain Will Fall

Image
The soundtrack to many a late-nineties late-night was a curation of contemporary culture; an album that was made completely of samples of other recordings. Taken from Joshua Paul Davis' monster vinyl collection, and augmented with snippets of dialogue and sound effects, there had literally never before been an album like DJ Shadow's Endtroducing - a seminal work that borrowed across genres and years. Twenty years later DJ Shadow's first full length recording in five years, The Mountain Will Fall, is released in June.  Pre order The Mountain Will Fall on iTunes here .
