Super Saturday Shopping: Markets

Image
There is nothing more fun than a few hours spent browsing in a local market, often you’ll find weekday professionals indulging their weekend passions. Besides the unexpected products you'll meet some fascinating people; I have met an Hermes executive selling brocante-style French antiques, a brand identity guru with a passion for men’s fashion and a radio presenter who loves mixing up confectionery in her kitchen. Here are five fabulous markets to check out today; break North Cross Road Market – SE22 - is a busy hub of street food, fashion crafts and esoteric finds. Look out for the summer must-have brightly patterned shirts from Robin Fashion , perfect for making that style statement at a summer soiree, fudge from Hayley Redmond, the ideal host/ess gift if you are going to friends for supper tonight, and jewellery from jeweller to the stars; Lisa E Moss . Buy jars of Bee Mercy organic honey, and enjoy some runny honey poured over goats cheese from Moo Town  and scout

Hectic Host: One Afternoon Two Bottles: Simple 2 Ingredient Cocktail Recipes

Image
Seems like summer has finally arrived this year. Here are some simple ideas for a sunny Sunday afternoon, a couple of bottles and a few friends.  I long discovered the error of my ways when having people over for drinks and leading with the welcoming question ‘what can I get you?’ After the third trip back from the off license in one afternoon I decided on my strategy and have stuck to it ever since; don’t ask; tell! Deciding what you are going to offer your guests is much easier than attempting to run a fully stocked cocktail bar; keep it simple with recipes that require only a couple of ingredients and you cannot go wrong. For a really simple Sunday brunch I buy lots of shellfish from F C Soper’ s in Nunhead or Moxon’s on Lordship Lane which I pass around piled on platters with garlic mayonnaise and granary bread from Ayres served with Black Velvets; equal measures of Guinness and Champagne, cava or prosecco.  BarFlyUk.com is a bespoke mobile cocktail bar service based

Saturday & Sunday Shopping: The Lambeth Country Fair

Image
We need no excuse to visit the glorious Brockwell Park - with its grassy loveliness and enviable lido – but this weekend there is every more reason to go. Today and tomorrow this Herne Hill haven is turned into a heaven of all things marvelous; the Lambeth Country Show is in town and boy should you go. I have my handwritten notes of last year’s traders, and a confirmed list of this year’s vendors from the organisers, but I was so engaged by one particular participant’s tale that I thought her story sums up exactly why we should all get along to Brockwell Park today and support this unique and enterprising event. Eddie’s Chilli Jam (visit the website here ) is the essence of mixing cultures and flavours; the spirit of the Lambeth Country Show in a jar. Not just sheep on a village green; the Lambeth Country Show is a celebration of diversity, of mixing things up a bit, from which only good things can happen. In the early 1960’s husband and wife Edwin (Eddie “Red Rum”) Ellis a

Kicking off on today at Holly Grove Shrubbery, between Bellenden Road and Rye Lane, Munch is supporting the local charity  The Peckham Food Bank , so even more reason to get down to Peckham and get your purse out. Saturday Shopping: Herne Hill SE24

Image
The lucky residents of Herne Hill, SE24, must feel like they have it all, probably because they pretty much have; one of London’s finest parks, probably the best open air swimming in London, traditional ‘village’ style shops and some exceptional independent boutiques. The area boasts an array of restaurants, cafés and bars for all tastes; and all of this with unbelievably excellent travel links to town - Victoria is less than 10 minutes away by train.  Half Moon Lane  I spent many a night in the late seventies / early eighties at the poetically named Half Moon, which was an important part of the new wave, indy post-punk scene. My diaries from those years are filled with names such as The Police, The Young Marble Giants, Holly and the Italians, Siam, The Venigmas, Screen 3, The Belle Stars, The Piranhas, The Alarm, The Europeans, The Gym Slips, The Sinceros, The Comsat Angels, The Godfathers and my favourite two new wave bands at the time; Bim and the Photos, all of whom I s
