Sowden: The SoftBrew Coffee Revolution

Image
A designer of considerable experience and prestige, George Sowden began his career studying architecture at Glousceteshire College of Art in the 1960s before his passion for design led him to travel to Milan under the tutelage of his mentor, the Italian architect Ettore Sottsass, the so-called 'Godfather of Italian Cool'. Setting up his studio, SowdenDesign in 1981, he went on to work with many of the world's leading home wares brands, winning the coveted Italian design award Compasso d'Oro in 2001. Sowden's latest venture looks at turning the laborious business of making perfect coffee at home into a simple and satisfying exercise. On a visit to a factory in China, Sowden was impressed by the skill and dedication of the workers there, utilising their expertise to create the specially designed components that go into making the Sowden SoftBrew coffee pot so unique! Based on 'cupping', the infusion method used by expert taster to determine the qu

A Day at 100% Design

Image
Roullier White were lucky enough to spend a day at the awe-inspiring 100% Design show in Kensington Olympia yesterday. The event featured some truly unique and stimulating creations in the world of design, from docking stations built into your table, to concrete garden chairs. The event showcased the forefront of interior design, with slick and beautiful furniture that longed to be part of your home. We have decided to showcase six companies, all unique in their own right. 1. Terra One of the first things that caught our eye were these deliciously crafted clay cups and bowls from Argentina. In the Terra studio, white clay is decorated with pigments, glaze and metal oxides, fixed firing the elements at 1120 C, which gives the pieces high mechanical resistance. The muted colours and the genius wooden spoon bowl holder won our hearts from the second we walked in. 2. Karven Next up is Dutch based company Karven. Simplicity in its most basic form is what defines Karven'

A Quick Chat with Matt Zhuk of Ex Idolo

Image
Ex Idolo is a niche fragrance house that has set the British perfume scene on fire in recent years. Following the release of their signature scent, Thirty Three, back in 2013, the fragrance world was left waiting a whole two years before news of the brand's latest release began to surface. Hand blended in London's Marylebone by talented nose Matt Zhuk, the quality and consistency of his perfumes is instantly evident, and new scent Ryder represents a new chapter in the emerging story of this exciting house. On the eve of Ryder's official launch, I was lucky enough to sit down with Matt to ask him a few questions: Both Ryder and your previous release, Thirty-Three, feature very special ingredients like aged Oud and rare Omani Frankincense. Is the ingredient your primary inspiration when creating a scent? For Thirty-Three I'd say that's probably more true than for Ryder although I have to admit that Omani Frankincense is a very inspiring material as well!

Today I'm Wearing: Autoportrait, by Olfactive Studio

Image
Today I'm wearing Autoportrait by Olfactive Studio, a rich, resinous composition that is perfectly suited to chilly, autumnal weather. Olfactive Studio are among the most intriguing modern fragrance houses in our collection here at Roullier White, taking inspiration from the world of photography in constructing their fabulous scents. Focussing on the art of collaboration, founder Céline Verleure sought to bring together photographers and perfumers to create a new form of olfactory inspiration. With photography from Luc Lapôtre, Clémence René-Bazin, and Frédéric Lebain (among others), a series of celebrated noses were tasked with transforming their stunning compositions into winning olfactory formulas. For Autoportrait, an image by Luc Lapôtre was transfigured into a warming, sensuous scent by nose Nathalie Lorson. Building from a light opening of fresh bergamot and the piney, herbacious resin of elemi, Autoportrait takes on sensational depth

British Food Fortnight at Roullier White

Image
British Food Fortnight is here, the time when we celebrate the wonderful world of British produce. Since 2002, the British Food Fortnight has celebrated farmers and producers up and down the country, whose fantastic fare has seen the British restaurant scene enjoy the kind of culinary renaissance we could only have dreamt of 30 years ago. Yet by looking increasingly outside of itself, towards the regional flavours and dishes brought back to these shores by migrants from across the globe, the last five years have seen the country's culinary landscape grow up to embrace a dizzying array of new taste sensations and flavour combinations. However, the beating heart of this gastronomic revolution are the small producers whose fantastic work produces the world class ingredients which propel chefs to stratospheric levels of recognition and prominence. To mark the occasion, we're taking a look at our favourite British cookbooks right now, written by some of the most talented chefs,

Jack's Staff Picks

Image
Jack Batchelor: 1. Benu - The Cookbook Benu is more than a cookbook. It's an expression of the artistic integrity of the chef. The elegant and stylised photography throughout makes this book such a pleasure to flick through. David Chang has stated that Benu is the greatest restaurant in America, and the unique and simplistic beauty of their presentation give that claim some real weight. 2. Eight & Bob - Cap D'Antibes When this fragrance landed at Roullier White earlier in the year I was instantly captivated and personally haven't been able to find a better scent . A fresh yet somewhat woody fragrance, Cap D'Antibes transports you to the golden age of the French Riviera through notes of Violet Leaf, Moss and Vanilla. The perfect everyday scent. 3. Andrea Maack - Coven Or, if you're after a real showstopper, Coven is a fragrance that instantly subverts everything you knew about fragrance. One of the most bombastic openings I've come across, Coven

Mrs White's: Kind to Sensitive Skin

Image
To mark National Eczema week, we're taking a look at the symptoms and causes of this painful and irritating reaction, and giving you the low down on how to prevent its development in your home. Also known as contact dermatitis, eczema is an affliction that affects up to 9% of the British public, which is just under six million people. Characterised by dry, itchy, and cracked skin, which can appear red and blotchy, a reaction is triggered when the skin comes in contact with everyday objects which contain irritating chemicals that aggravate the affected area. Most frequently occurring on the hands or face, mass produced domestic cleaners, cosmetics, and fragrances all contain potentially irritating components which can induce a reaction with frequent use. Solvents, soaps, detergents, and resins have all been found to be potentially harmful, as they frequently contain synthetic preservatives, heavy metals, or other irritating substances. This comes in the form of a number of ev

Absolutely Magazine: September 2015: Heaven Scent: Oud

Image
Oud, oodh, agar or agarwood is a mysterious, misunderstood, incredibly expensive and controversial ingredient that is highly prized in perfume making. Used for millennia in the Middle East, where it was imported from its native Indonesia, oud is the product of the Aquilaria tree, an inner secretion that the tree produces to protect itself against disease. Unlike other tree resins that seep from the bark, oud is not detectable from the outside and so over the course of history many trees have been fruitlessly felled looking for this rare commodity. Hopefully today oud is mainly sustainably farmed but farming is in itself a very lengthy and costly process, with the tree being introduced to infection and left to grow, hoping it will successfully combat disease by the production of the grey, distinctive smelling substance. The tree must be cut down and opened before any oud can be discovered, and then a sapling is planted in its place and the whole process starts all over again. The

Today I'm Wearing: Ryder, by Ex Idolo

Image
Today I'm wearing Ryder, the hotly anticipated new scent from Ex Idolo mastermind, Matthew Zhuk. After the success of his exclusive, critically acclaimed Oud scent, Thirty Three, this new composition makes use of dark wood notes and rich pipe tobacco to conjure the atmosphere of smoky, mahogany-panelled private members club in Mayfair or Ryder Street in St. James. However, the star of the show has to be Zhuk's use of a wonderfully rare Omani frankincense that gives the scent its sumptuously nuanced character, taking in accords of rich red fruits and sweetly perfumed smoke for a complex and unique dry down. A boozy, woody opening sets the scene perfectly for a scent that unfolds to reveal an exquisite blending of masculine and feminine fragrance characteristics; all smoky florals and heartening warm amber, making Ryder an exquisite unisex scent. Warming and comforting as the summer fades and autumnal chills begin to take hold, it's safe to say that Zhuk has done it again

Today I'm Wearing: Incitatus, by Electimuss

Image
Today I'm wearing Incitatus , an exciting new scent from the British based perfume house of Electimuss. Electimuss find inspiration for their exotic and uniquely modern fragrances by looking to the past, specifically the world of Ancient Roman perfumery where scent making was refined into a more disciplined art form from its origins in Egyptian and Mesopotamian society.  The word 'perfume' is itself of Latin origin, being derived from the verb perfumare, meaning 'to pass through smoke'. Taking its name from the prized racehorse that was the darling of the ostensibly mad Emperor, Caligula, Incitatus is a fitting tribute to the animal that was known throughout the empire for its prowess as a racing stallion. Said to have been kept in a solid marble stable, with an ivory trough and a jewelled necklace, Incitatus mirrors the opulence of the animal's life with its combination of fine notes. After an invigorating opening of fresh bergamot, notes of hay and laure
