Ineke: Artisan Perfumer: San Francisco

Image
Much is made of French fragrance, and it is true they are amongst the best in the world. The skills required have been acquired over centuries and they are shared with only the most select. On the other side of the world San Francisco is the epicentre of counterculture: from Haight-Ashbury and The Castro to Mavericks; the city thrives on progressive free-thinking. QUESTION: what happens when you combine a classic French perfume training with the modern Californian sensibility? ANSWER: a collection of the most charming scents we have ever been fortunate enough to share. Ineke Ruhland’s eponymous perfume house combines the discipline of an academic study of her art with West Coast blue-sky thinking - of the type you could only manage if you lived on a hill by the sea. Perfect for summer - we love them all - we urge to add at least one of the sublime scents to your fragrance wardrobe. After My Own Heart Top: Bergamot, Crisp Green Foliage, Raspberry Middle...

Beauty: Love: Desire: Aedes de Venustas

Image
There is a shrine to scent in the heart of Greenwich Village; Aedes de Venustas (Temple of Beauty in Latin; after Venus the Goddess of Beauty, Love & Desire) is the darling of the New York fashion cognoscenti and the style savvy.  Karl Bradl & Robert Gerstner have taken their passion for fragrance to the next level by establishing their own perfume house. The common thread of the Aedes de Venustas fragrance collection is Frankincense, the millennia-old temple offering to the gods. The collection now stands at six and it is one of the most sophisticated and sexy lines that we are lucky to include in our selection at Roullier White - the scents are standout and the presentation is impeccable.  Cierge de Lune  Cool and limpid as moonlit desert air. Velvety and sensuous as the midnight sky… Like the flower’s namesake – the Queen of the Night in Mozart’s  Magic Flute  – Cierge de Lune  spans a thrilling range, from cryst...

E. Coudray: Nohiba: Special Limited Edition

Image
the era, the star, the scent Nohiba by E. Coudray enjoys a glamour that eludes all other much more expensive scents. Originally released in 1922, as Tulipe Noire, the fragrance was worn by one of the decade’s most decadent, defying and defining divas. Style-icon Josephine Baker ruled the Parisian cabaret scene of the art deco age complete with her pet cheetah, Chiquita, in a cloud of E. Coudray. Not just a fierce entertainer, Ms Baker was a ground-breaking civil rights campaigner; refusing to play to segregated audiences in her native US, and war hero. She risked personal peril in Paris where she assisted the French Resistance during WWII. Ms Baker was awarded the Croix de Guerre and was made a Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur by General Charles de Gaulle. What a woman. On July 18th Nohiba is being re-released in a 2000 limited edition. If you would like to experience this staggering scent, with a history to...

Absolutely Magazine: July 2016: Finding Your Niche

Image
Finding Your Niche by Lawrence Roullier White In simple terms the world of perfumery retailing is split into two main groups; there are the very commercial - and often very, very good - ‘mainstream’ fragrances, of which everyone is well aware, and there are the more hard-to-find ‘niche’ fragrances. The reason for the polarisation is that mainstream fragrances are backed by big businesses who spend a vast amount of money marketing them, and the less well known brands simply do not have the budget for TV ad campaigns and double page spreads in the glossies and therefore remain under the radar. Therein lies the dichotomy.  The positioning of perfumes at the front entrance of virtually every department store in the world is not a coincidence, commercial fragrances are high turnover lines, usually carrying high margins and counters are frequently staffed by the brand thereby saving the store costs.  To facilitate the rapid sales required commercial fragrances are...

Inspired by Galliano’s habit of burning fragrant candles while he worked, Han adopted this practice for himself, discovering an unwavering love of fragrance in the process. After creating his own range of hugely sought after scented candles, Timothy Han has turned his attention to fine fragrance, delivering a pair of truly stunning compositions in the process.
