Edytas Polish Restaurant: Dartmouth Road, Forest Hill, SE23

In these days of digital views and online menus when someone suggests supper somewhere, one’s first reaction is to look up the restaurant’s website and prepare for the event. Having unsuccessfully located a website for Edytas Polish Restaurant on Dartmouth Road, Forest Hill, SE23, I abandoned my search and, preferring not to be swayed either way by online reviews, I arrived on Saturday night expecting the unexpected. As it turned nothing could have prepared me for the evening ahead, which was a delight from start to finish.

We were cheerfully, and charmingly, greeted by our host, who was to be our waiter for the evening. The simple and short menu raised a few questions, which were answered with careful consideration. I was keen to ensure I sampled what he ate and his recommendations were willingly, and proudly, shared.

To start two of us shared fried Ruskié Dumplings (£6.00), stuffed with cottage cheese and potato, deliciously heartening fayre, a plate full of comfort. Our two friends both ordered the Herring and Potato Salad (£4.00) which was elegantly presented, piled on a circle of Polish toast. For the main course two of us shared the house recommended, and subsequently endorsed by me, Knuckle of Pork (£9.20) cooked in beer and honey which was moist, delicious and quite literally fell off the bone. The non-meat eaters enjoyed fried Salmon and Trout respectively and both reported that the fish was cooked to perfection, again moist full of flavour and well seasoned. We had side orders of fried beetroot (lovely), fried potatoes and grilled vegetables. We finished with the most deliciously flavoursome creamy, baked cheesecake, of which we are still all talking. Remarkably the bill was only £17.50 per head including tip – you take your own wine.

I popped into the kitchen where I was warmly greeted by the chef, who proudly showed me the extremely clean and well organised workspace.

Lucky locals of Forest Hill should remember Edytas as a viable alternative to cooking at home, as indeed I shall, a short journey from Peckham Rye is well worth an evening of wholesome, home cooked fayre. Do not be put off by the lack of online presence, or the humble exterior, this is a hidden gem of a restaurant that deserves to do well and I urge you to try it for yourself.

Edytas also caters for takeaway orders, call 020 8616 8874, to order or make a booking
