Super Saturday Shopping; Around Rye Books & Dulwich Picture Gallery Bazzar

Today is a super fun Saturday shopping day; Alistair Kenward’s fabulous Rye Books is celebrating its second birthday.

Happy Birthday!

Pop along at 2 pm for lots of fun and frivolity. Alistair has organised live music from the Dulwich Ukulele Club , the unique humour of singer-songwriter Flame Proof Moth  and tunes from DJ Jean Marie who will be spinning his unique collection of eclectically shaped discs!

Opposite Dub Dub andAway, the VW camper van hire business, is celebrating its 1st birthday so pop across and explore their beautiful vans.

Also on Upland Road is the newly opened, and staggeringly superb, vintage-inspired jewellery store, ZaraTaylor. Just look at these dear little deer rings, £30.

Next door Davies and Vaughan produce some seriously spectacular jewellery. The collection of intricate and expertly crafted precious jewellery is a joy to see.

Pop across the road and say hello to Heather owner of favourite vintage fashion store, ChiChi Ra Ra. Heather McKenzie’s small store is full to bursting with a carefully selected collection of original and unique pieces. If you want to avoid the fashion faux-pas of being seen in the same frock as someone else this party season, Heather is your lady.

Just around the corner on Barry Road, Boulangerie Jade, the newly opened French bakery and café, is certainly one to check out. With an excellent reputation which precedes it, the bakery’s first has been famously trading in Blackheath’s Tranquil Vale, Boulangerie Jade is set to become a local fixture prized for its quality and delicious products . Pop along and welcome this new addition to our wonderful collection of extraordinary East Dulwich shops.

Next door Barry’s Foodstore is probably my most used shop over the years; this independent convenience store is the most convenient shop ever. Not only for its handy location on my route home, but because of its selection of very fine merchandise.

The collection of organic food is excellent, all the basics one would expect and clearly and cleanly displayed and, the wine and beer selection makes it easy to always find something delicious and appropriate.

The magazine selection is unusually good, I pick up my elusive Interview magazine here and you will stumble across other hard-to-find things such as Swedish Anna almond biscuits. Barry’s Foodstore is even open on Christmas morning!

Today is also the Dulwich Picture Gallery Christmas Bazaar. This successful annual event has swapped locations this year to accommodate the increased number of stall holders, local designers and makers numbering more than 30, and to allow for longer trading times. Open from 10am to 5pm at St Barnabus Parish Hall, Dulwich Village. See you there!

Lawrence Roullier White's shopping column appears in the monthly editions of SE Magazines.
