We all know the importance of proper hygiene, but did you know that your trusty household soap and hand wash can contain a number of potentially harmful chemicals that could be the source of itching, irritation, and eczema?

Two such chemicals are sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), and Triclosan, both of which have come under increasing scrutiny in recent years for both their ubiquity and their potentially damaging properties. SLS is used to create a foaming effect, and is found in a variety of body care products, from shampoo to toothpaste. This common chemical can, however, cause dryness and irritation for the surprisingly large number of people who are sensitive to it. Similarly, Triclosan is added to a large number of care and beauty products as an antibacterial agent, appearing in the ingredient list of almost half of all commercially available soaps, not to mention a huge number of deodorants and toothpastes, to name but a few. Currently undergoing review by the FDA, the substance also known as 'Microban' or 'Biofresh' not only exposes us humans to the risk of contact dermatitis, but it can be dangerously damaging to water supplies when flushed out of our homes. The environmental impact is even so bad that the chief Swedish conservation body have recommended a ban on consumer products that include the chemical!

Bâtard Folding Picnic Knife by Lamson & Goodnow

As author of The Best Bread Ever; Charles Van Over is expected to show everywhere up with an armful of bread. Whilst Charles enjoys breaking bread with friends; he does insist that the bread is properly sliced with a breadknife, not just ripped apart. The problem here is that bread knives are very long and with their serrated edges they are not the easiest of things to carry around. Charles wondered why a folding bread knife could not be produced and took his idea for a pocket bread knife to Lamson & Goodnow, American manufacturers of the LamsonSharp range.
