1967: Jefferson Airplane: Surrealistic Pillow: Comin' Back to Me

The summer had inhaled and held its breath too long
The winter looked the same, as if it never had gone ....

'Once upon a time there were songs like this. I can still smell the earthy and sweaty smells....Now dust..'

'This song,,, It was early winter 69. I was 18 and seeing a girl who was attending Lawrence University in Appleton, Wis. Doing a long distance relationship and that winter was so long, we were in deep acid love.... When spring came I drifted along, doing drugs and going to rock festivals. Until the draft notice... I never saw or heard from her again.'

'I left NJ after high school graduation in the summer of 65 and headed to the height to play guitar and hook up with a band. I played around with a local band and we were makin' some noise when I met Cassie she was perfect. We were magic the band was cookin' in the summer of 67 I was drafted. The last day we were together we saw the Airplane and held each other as Marty sang this haunting tune. Next day we kissed I left and sent most of the next 12 dodging bullets tryin' to keep my ass alive, 4 months into my tour the letters stopped. I knew I had to get hope. The minute I was discharged I went back. I learned she had been hit by a car driven by a guy high on acid. I still see her in my dreams almost 50 yrs later.'

'She was 14 and I was 17 and I fell in love with her...then I went away. Then for years I looked for her and found her to be married. I went away again, but I felt the guilt of leaving her when I was just a kid. Now...now at 63 I found her at 60 and we fell deeply in love. She sent me a text asking if I could find this song. I wept when I listened to it. It's never to late to fall in love...'

'Lost my wife when I was in Viet Nam. Always thought she'd be singing this song instead of me. Kind of a different kind of story. Got over Viet Nam. Her, I think about to this day.'
