Hue & Cry - and Data Protection!

Hue & Cry - and Data Protection!
This week I am celebrating inspirational, bold and vibrant colour however before I do I have been informed that I must ask you a huge favour. The new General Data Protection Regulation kicks in on May 25th and therefore I am forced to request that, should you wish to continue to receive my weekly missive, you re-subscribe to the newsletter with a simply click at the bottom of this page.

To be honest I don't really understand why however I am not one to stand in the way of progress! I thoroughly enjoy writing to you each week and I would be devastated to lose you - plus it would mean that I am simply talking to myself which would be very sad indeed!!

So on with the show and my thoughts on colour..............

Oddly I used to be rather frightened of it and became the king of navy blue and grey, however as I get older I have learned to embrace it to the extent that when asked by a fantastic menswear designer recently if he could send me the gift of a wonderful silk tie I impressed myself by choosing a bright orange and cream stripe! It is rather dashing and I like to think I am growing as a person!

The irrepressible Perfumer Sarah McCartney has been making the British perfume scene more colourful for quite some time with her hypnotic blend of imagination, irreverence and humour.  Now she has imagined colour for us in perfume form and is, I believe, the first to do so with her new collection 'Our Modern Lives'. This 100% natural range of contemporary masterpieces unveils Sarah's spiritual side - she has been teaching yoga for over 15 years so as well as being beatific and bendy she knows how to dig deep and connect with us on a much more fundamental level. Here she uses colour to represent mood, combining high quality ingredients to transport us and touch not just our minds but our souls too.  The seven superlative scents include 'Green', the smell of rebirth, including cucumber, mint and spinach: The serene 'Orange' which conjures a striking sunset of peach, honeybush, vanilla and cocoa and my personal favourite 'Blue' which explores the sense of balance ( I am a Libran after all!) with a magical frankincense over English lavender and hyacinth. This a is veritable spectrum of scent and makes life that little bit more vivid!

Colour has also made a huge splash in homeware this season. I was getting very tired of monotone however the summer palette is awash with sea blues and greens, dusky pinks and pastels and even some jewel colours. We Brits are latecomers to the pleasures of strong colour in the home however we are making up for lost time and vibrant tints are now our top sellers.

My favourite trays are still handmade around the corner from the store as they have been since the 1940's and I have invested in the most delicious hues of turquoise, tourmaline, emerald and smokey quartz. They look incredibly glamorous with their gold and silver balconies and diamond pattern detail - like something carried by Zelda Fitzgerald (sporting several cocktails obviously!).

Our bath and shower mats from France are the best in the world and yesterday we welcomed a new addition in dusky 'old rose'. It really it the most incredibly chic thing and I don't think I will be able to resist for much longer. Fortunately my 'wet room' (or 'car wash' as some rather bitter friends have christened it!) will be finished this week so I have the perfect excuse.

Likewise our oval 'Art Plates' from Provence have caused a stir in the window. I bought these for myself last year - an act of complete indulgence -  however they sold out in four days so I am obviously not alone. The pottery fires them at very high temperatures and the ones that don't survive are ground down and mixed with clay to make new plates which is what gives these pieces their unique textured surface - up-cycling at its finest! They are then hand-painted so the each is slightly different. I am enamoured of the blue design is it looks like the inside of a mussel shell. We also have pink, mint and olive.

Finally my new Portuguese pitcher got an outing last w/e as I decided that a glass of Pimms al fresco was a must on Sunday afternoon - I had visited a trade show at London's Olympia (a fantastic reminder of how much talent there is in the world) and finished the gardening so deserved a reward!  I used the Aqua Green with my  recycled tumblers which looked perfect and I felt very decadent - I do love the summer!

Wishing you a w/e of sunshine and please click below as I would miss you!
