I Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside!

I Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside!

I spent last w/e in St Leonards-On-Sea with some friends who have bought the most beautiful Georgian house on the seafront. I took them a gift of our striped mugs in pale grey as Sam is an architect and I guessed that this would suit the interior perfectly. The theory is that they will think of me when they drink their morning coffee from these stylish pieces  however as their view is a complete panorama of the ocean I very much doubt it!
We walked into Hastings and spent an afternoon rummaging in the second hand/antique shops in the Old Town and had a thoroughly wonderful time. It was absolutely baking - in fact my friends took a dip in the sea at 9.30am which is virtually unheard of in the UK!

On my return to RW, I was reminded by a thoughtful customer( my thanks to you Nathalie) of the practicalities of wearing scent in the sunshine and so I thought that I would share a few words of wisdom.
Perfume contains high levels of alcohol which can, if worn for a protracted period in direct sunshine, cause a photo-sensitive skin reaction which basically means that the alcohol burns the skin and damages the epidermis.
The best way to wear scent in the sunshine is to dab it onto the hair at the temples and at the nape of the neck. Hair is porous and absorbs the scent so it will last longer than on skin in hot weather. Also apply scent to the chest and back before getting dressed - the fragrance will be held by the fabric and emanate through your clothes so again it will last much longer.
Do NOT spritz the decollete area of the upper chest and neck and then sunbathe - this is asking for trouble and is very ageing! Pulse points and arms are fine. I speak from bitter experience here and it is so very easy to avoid the risk. Scent is sensational in warm weather as we smell via the process of evaporation so fragrance travels further, faster.
If you are looking for something cool to wear in the summer heat I would suggest taking a look at the fragrance queen of Iceland, Andrea Maack. Nobody can conjure a breath of freshness quite like Ms M, a very talented fine artist who makes scent for the love of it, drawing on her homeland as inspiration. I would recommend the glacial allure of 'CRAFT' with ice, cold metal notes and aldehydes which I find most dynamic and 'SOFT TENSION' a mist of fragile freesias over white musk.

I recently finished my bathroom and wet room and it was time to choose bathmats. I adore the French Bathmats that I found in Carcassonne years ago and now import - the quality, design and colour choice is superior to anything I have seen anywhere in the world and so it was exciting to take a few home to see which colour would work the best. As the selection looks like the Dulux colour chart and I love the old rose and peacock blue shades I was convinced that I would select something very bright and  arresting - a splash of intensity in a calm space. However what did I purchase? Ivory and Grey!  They chose themselves and, I hope you agree, look lovely. I was aiming for the 'Hotel Bathroom' feel as this is one of my favourite things about travelling!

I finally took the plunge this week( sorry!) and purchased our fish tureen( I call him Moby). I will admit that I originally ordered him for myself to place on the kitchen dresser where he looks magnificent sitting next to the wild boar tureen ( Sir Francis Bacon), however every time a Moby arrived he was snapped up and so I never got him home....until now!

I was delighted when our fantastic, new, fish restaurant 'Next Door' also bought him and now I see Moby 2 every time I visit. It is a great compliment when local restaurants buy from us and lovely to see pieces that I have chosen displayed in different settings.

I shall use him for French fish soup with aioli and gruyere croutons and for Bouillabaisse! He is a handsome beast and a family heirloom of the future!

Finally I have a friend's Birthday this w/e and am utterly delighted with my gift choice. She is an extraordinary woman whom I admire enormously both for her professional achievements and her general joie de vivre, so it had to be something special. These golden cuffs are hand-lacquered and made from horn so every one is completely unique - I chose them because they remind me of Wonderwoman which seems appropriate!

Off to do a rain dance - I have finally had enough sunshine and watering the garden is getting very tedious.

I have been practising my moves so fingers crossed!!!

Have a lovely w/e wherever you may be.
