A Visit To Sweden & Practical Styling

A Visit To Sweden & Practical Styling

This week, Roullier White's store manager Lene and I travelled to Stockholm to meet with the cream of Scandinavian design! Sweden's capital is magnificent and the architecture really gets one in the mood to discover artisans with a penchant for sharp, clean aesthetics!

We were not disappointed and found fantastic leathers from Denmark, rich velvets from Sweden and the most talented potter from Latvia, among many outstanding young craftsmen and women. Our Autumn offer is going to be stunning and I am so excited to unveil new talent - so watch this space!!

When we returned there were, as ever, some boxes on my desk and I tore into them with my usual gusto. Inside were three of my favourite finds this year - products that are problem solving yet beautiful and, in my opinion, the very best
of their kind on the market.

Buy Now - Reversible Granite Pestle & Mortar - £34
I have been searching for the perfect pestle and mortar for years. I have tried dozens and while most have been perfectly functional there have always been one or two issues - too big, too small, too light, spices impregnate the body of the mortar and taint subsequent grindings etc. Well no more!! I now own the perfect, granite pestle and mortar. It is large and nice and heavy, so doesn't move when you are applying pressure and it is reversible!!  The larger aperture can be used for herbs, nuts, grains etc and then, turn it upside down to revel a much smaller aperture that is perfect for strong spices. This means that the inevitable penetration of these aromas will not impact less pungent recipes. It is such a simple solution I can't believe that nobody has thought of it before. I also love the look of it so am leaving on permanent display on the kitchen dresser. Form and Function, too of the finest words in the dictionary!
Paper Towels are a necessary evil. On balance, using recycled and recyclable paper seems a better choice for the environment than washing tea towels every day - however they are bulky, ugly things and I have, until now, hidden them in a cupboard! I recently discovered a wonderful brand from Germany that uses powder-coated, sheet steel to create some of the most beautiful kitchenware and, among the collection, the perfect paper towel holder. Incredibly chic and modern, the elegant white curves conceal the roll whilst leaving it totally accessible and I am smitten. I would like to shake the designer by the hand as this is the perfect solution to a universal problem of having it to hand for mopping emergencies whiles not making the counter look untidy!

Buy Now - Stainless Steel Cocktail Shaker With Integrated Strainer - £14.95
Buy Now - Stainless Steel Ice Bucket & Integrated Tongs - £29.95

Tonight I am going to friends for cocktails. The cocktail revival has been steadily growing in popularity over the last couple of years and now it is almost a big as it was when Dorothy Parker sat at the round table in the Algonquin hotel, tossing out her barbed bon mots including

"I like to have a martini,
Two at the very most.
After three I’m under the table,
after four I’m under my host".

This is both witty and wise as cocktails are exciting explosions of flavour that should be treated with respect and not guzzled ! I adore the paraphernalia that accompanies the creation of a cocktail - the shaker, the ice bucket and tongs etc. They have a timeless glamour and are actually essential rather than just fashionable accoutrements.

I own two cocktail shakers including this new specimen which is a great size/ shape and made from stainless steel so it doesn't tarnish. I also recently discovered the perfect ice bucket. This should always have a lid which stops the ice melting and have accompanying tongues that MUST attach to the body of the bucket in some way otherwise they are impossible to keep track of. Size is also important, you don't need something huge that takes up a lot of space, just enough for seven or so cubes. This example is glorious - neat and compact whilst still elegant.

My poison is the 'Old Fashioned' which I researched after watching James Bond order it in 'Diamonds Are Forever' shall we say 'some years' ago?
Naturally I shall be having just two!

Your very good health,

Michaelx
