Homeward Bound !

Homeward Bound !

Feeling rather ebullient after 10 days of indulgence in France - especially loved visiting Nimes for the first time( thank you persuading me Emma) and marvelling at its sensational Roman Amphitheatre and brand new Museum  - an architectural triumph that looks like it is wrapped in a toga!

Wending my way homeward today with the touch of sadness that always comes when leaving a place that you love. Still, I have Stockholm to look forward to and apparently some of my new orders have begun arriving at the store so I am most excited. Have just popped passport into my 'Travel Wallet' - something that has changed the way that I travel as no-longer panic looking for passport/ boarding pass/euros/keys etc. etc. because they are always to hand and together. I also like it at check-in because one doesn't have to keep searching in bags for the aforementioned travel accoutrement. I have it in black but we also carry in a fantastic orange or a very chic taupe. An absolutely essential travel companion, as is the bright leather luggage tag which will distinguish my black suitcase from every other one on the carousel!

Speaking of travel, I recently received a lovely letter from a swimwear designer thanking me for 'Mrs White's Swimcare' our natural swimsuit cleaner. For those that have invested in a good bikini, swimsuit or trunks they actually need a little more care than one would suspect. The combination of sun, chlorine from the pool or sand can really impact the fabric causing the colours to fade, the shape to alter and the fabric to rot. Mrs White’s Swimcare will neutralise the harmful effects of chlorine, preventing any long-term damage and is also specially formulated to effectively remove corrosive sand particles and with the inclusion of lime essential oil it will leave your swimsuit smelling as fresh as a summer’s day. Good swimwear is expensive and a little TLC can make all the difference. My Paul Smith swim-shorts look as good as the day that I bought them!

Having been very busy up until my holiday, plus the very hot weather doesn't put anyone in the mood for physical chores(!) I have let a few jobs slide and this weekend I need to get hold of the reins. My windows are a disgrace so it will a half day of me and Mrs White's  'Let the Light Shine Through' ( the name still makes me smile!). It is completely natural and genius with glass  - I remove with scrunched up newspaper, a trick my grandmother taught me that cannot be beaten. The garden furniture also needs attention as it has had a lot of use this year and I only gave it a brief spruce up in the spring. We created a natural  cleaning product specifically for this purpose, 'Everything In The Garden Is Lovely', simply because we couldn't find one. One has to be careful with cleaners in the garden as they will be absorbed into the ground. Commercial cleaning products often contain bleach and phosphorous which is not great for grass, plants or the environment generally. 'EITGIL' cuts through tree sap, dirt, bird droppings and other garden detritus in an instant, plus we also added mandarine and lime to the formula so the furniture smells amazing for weeks. I know it sounds like a luxury to have a cleaning product specifically for garden furniture however I use it inside too and it comes in a 1 litre concentrate which can then be diluted to over 130 litres of solution( I put it in a plant spray) so it is actually quite a bargain and means that there is no damage to flora or fauna so we have done our best!

After that it's back to work.  I love my job so those words do not fill me with dread however every profession comes with its own set of stresses and strains and mine is no exception. I try to concentrate on the things that make me most happy - products that are both beautifully designed and practical.

I shall leave you with a fine example which springs to mind as I did bring a few bottles of wine home ! I am particularly enamoured of a red called 'Pompadour '- as in Madame - if you are visiting the Carrefour supermarkets any time soon.

These honeycomb wine racks are simplicity itself and are everything that you will ever need from a storage system. They are smart and architectural with 6 hexagonal apertures that can be clipped together to extend the capacity - for example the black version in the picture is two wine racks clipped together on their sides. This means that not only can one build a collection slowly but that the shape of the wine rack can be made to fit awkward spaces or constructed into a show-stopping, space-age sculpture depending on preference. A number of companies have tried to copy this design which always makes me cross, however I have investigated and the original is, as ever, the finest rendition. Available in brass, copper or black they are well made and substantial enough to last a lifetime.

Original, considered, practical and visually stunning. There, I'm feeling better already!

à bientôt
