Amazing Alpaca, Comely Cashmere, Wonderful Wool
&
The Marvellous Mrs Mastenbroek !
Good Morning!
And how are we feeling? There are a lot of colds around as the season turns so I hope that you have avoided them thus far and that the answer is 'chipper'?!
This week the Good Doctor took me to see 'The Joker' which is a very hot ticket with forensic psychiatrists (for obvious reasons!). Although I appreciated that it was extremely well directed, the central performance astonishing and the allegory particularly pertinent,  I did feel rather traumatised by the experience and so dashed home to watch an old episode of Downton Abbey and marvel once again at the furniture!
This put me in a rather opulent, snuggly mood - plus my heating came on for the first time (whimpers) - and so I have indulged in some truly sumptuous swag to make us feel just that little bit more prepared for the coming months.
Shop Now - Women's Cashmere Socks - £30
Shop Now - Men's Cashmere Socks - £35
Toasty toes are essential to well-being in a British winter and what could be more cosy than cashmere socks? This year we have some really beautiful, nordic patterns for women in damson, black or steel grey and elegant classic colours of grey, navy, red and black for gentlemen. This is fine quality cashmere and should always be hand-washed in Mrs White's all-natural 'Woolly Answer' which takes all of three minutes - in fact the Lovely Lene tells me that she washes hers while taking a shower, which is a most interesting notion!
Shop Now - Baby Alpaca Wool - Two Tone Throws - £165
I am thrilled to report that we have discovered the most incredible company, based in Hertfordshire, that specialise in making scarves and throws from baby alpaca wool. As I am sure that you know, this is recognised as one of the most luxurious fabrics in the world and is also the warmest as each fibre contains microscopic air pockets which not only make for the finest insulation but also ensure that it is as light as a feather!

I will confess that I fell in love with their two-tone throws over a years ago and when I cannot get a design out of my head I know that it is a keeper. These huge throws use strong contrasting colours (one on each side) to great effect, from orange and crimson (selected by the Lovely Lene) to blue/grey and my personal favourite, papal purple and gold! They are spectacular, utterly luxurious and will ensure a radiant glow when reading or watching TV whatever the weather has in store. You can also nestle under them with your nearest and dearest if you are feeling particularly generous!
Shop Now - Plain Baby Alpaca Wool Scarves - £49
This company also produce stunning scarves from the same baby alpaca wool and I have chosen elegant, plain colours from a deep navy through orange melange, denim blue and my favourite - curry! They are a very generous size so can wrap the ears which is vital.
As readers will be aware, I cannot resist a good scarf and I have purloined the navy and curry already. I find that these are so snug that I don't need a jacket yet - although a waterproof has been essential this week........once again!
Shop Now - Women's Wool Slippers - £36.95
Shop Now - Men's Wool Slippers - £36.95
Our Danish woollen slippers have just arrived and I have added two new colours this season. A Fair Trade product that is made by hand in Nepal, - each artisan can only make two pairs per day such is the skill required - they mould to the feet and are the most comfortable indoor footwear that I have ever owned and very practical to slip in and out of. For women this winter we have a wonderful sky blue and for gentlemen a leaf green - I was going for the colours of nature!
Shop Now - Wool Plant Pots - £26
And why should our houseplants plants not be tucked-up too? Our friends in Sweden have a new range of decorative, woollen plant pots (lined in rubber to make them water resistant) in the most vibrant of colours - from pistachio and pale pink to petrol and rust. Shapes also vary from the traditional barrel to a more tulip-like structure and are absolutely gorgeous.
Soft, malleable and furry they add Scandinavian chic so any interior and will keep
one's roots toasty!
Shop Now - Ruth Mastenbroek - Dagian (EdP) 50ml - £90
I had a visit this week from British Master Perfumer Ruth Mastenbroek and her charming son to unveil her new fragrance. To put this in context, I had been feeling a little down as the last 3 fragrance collections that I have discovered and requested had failed to hit the mark. I just hadn't fallen in love with a single one. Then Ruth arrived and my faith in olfactory talent, innovation and great taste was restored in an instant!  'Dagian' (which means 'dawn' in old English) has it all and is the most optimistic fragrance to have crossed my desk in quite some time.  Ruth translates the beginning of a new day and its "exhilarating hope of a fresh start" with a truly epic explosion of lime, lemon and mint at the top that would wake even the most practised somnambulist. Heart notes of jasmine, orange blossom and a mellifluous sandalwood base evoke a velvety, rather knowing sensuality that is both soapy and deliciously seductive at the same time. My thanks to the Marvellous Mrs Mastenbroek for raising the bar and producing a scent that is energising, sophisticated, culturally relevant and uplifting - what more can one ask?
This w/e I travel to West Sussex as the GD is on-call and cannot leave the county.  I hope to see lots of stunning colours as October is a beautiful month in the countryside and the Ashdown Forest is on our doorstep.
I wish you a happy and relaxing w/e,
Michaelx
