Today I Will Be Wearing: Calé’s Tepidarium

Image
As the horse chestnuts outside my window turn from green to orange, as summer, the season of heightened scents, slips slowly away from us and we await a frosty reception, we are in that magical in-between time. Struggling to understand why Calé’s glorious scent Tepidarium was called that – not evoking in any sense the slightest hint of a Roman bath – I realised that it means exactly that, neither hot or cold, somewhere marvellously in the middle. Like the warm dawn sun on your face, a toe dipped into a lukewarm lake; comforting, non-jarring but a little bit exciting and very enticing.  Suggesting a Mediterranean scent, heavy with citrus, Calé’s Tepidarium , is far from that. Sure there is the initial fizz of sparkling zest which quickly disperses, and there is a bit of green freshness buried in the base, but Tepidarium is essentially a borderline gourmand scent with a big fruity middle which, despite its listed fragrance notes, comes together as a boozy peach; I can even smell

Today I Will Be Wearing: Aedes de Venustas

Image
There are those seminal moments in life that stop you in your tracks and make your re-evaluate the things you thought you knew. As a school boy the first time I heard the Roland C78 opening bars of Heart of Glass on the radio, as a six former discovering Edie Sedgwick and the movies of Andy Warhol, in my twenties the first time I saw the New York skyline as my cab approached Manhattan, many years later literally having my breath taken away by the Aedes de Venustas perfumery in the West Village. It is strange how many of my poignant moments revolve around New York; my Manhattan moments, the fleeting things that leave you changed forever.  Smelling Aedes de Venustas ’s first release scent for the first time had a similarly profound effect on me, and it appears I am not alone. Colleagues and customers at Roullier White seem almost shaken by the initial experience of this staggering aroma; such is the impact of this stellar new scent which has taken the fragrance world by storm.

Saturday Shopping: Vintage Fashion Trail in South London

Image
With the homogenised high street offer and instantly copied designer togs flooding the market it is difficult for local hipsters to shop 'new' and remain individual, never has the vintage craze been more popular than it is now. We are so lucky in our enclave of leafy London, that is bursting with business creativity, to have some of the best vintage and pre-loved stores around. This week we decided to take a tour of just some of the vintage fashions stores in and around East Dulwich and Peckham. Here is our top ten to visit this weekend, listed in alphabetical order. Charlie Foxtrot Vintage , Nunhead Green, Nunhead, SE15 Charlie Foxtrot Vintage pop up shop pops up on and off in Nunhead. This weekend is the last before the team takes a break for the summer. Expect lots of good quality finds and lots of fun browsing the voluminous space. Lots for guys and girls and ocaissional items for the home too. Make sure you get a long today or tomorrow and whilst you are ther

Saturday Shopping: Brockley Market

Image
Brockley Market has quickly established itself as one of the London’s leading showcases and outlets for artisan and small producers, with a reputation which extends far beyond our lovely  patch of South London. Researching this piece I was struck by the ingenuity and originality of the vendors who come together every Saturday in Lewisham College’s car park on Lewisham Way, and the prestigious list of their clients they supply. The roster of traders reads like a who’s who of the movers and shakers of the slow food revolution, with a cast of colourful characters as engaging as the produce they sell. Argentinean brothers who hand make ice cream (The Ice Cream Union – try the gin & tonic sorbets), an Anglo-Austrian paring of a love of food and all things Austrian (Fleisch Mob) and a desire to initiate the unenlightened into the joys of ox tongue and cheek (Tongue and Cheek), to name but a few. This is Street Food Theatre.  Skip breakfast & skip along to Brockley this mor

Today I Will Be Wearing: Sunshine by Demeter Fragrance Library

Image
Having basked in glorious sunshine for a few days today London is gray and stormy. Welcome relief for our parched parks, but personally I am missing the sunny spell. Great news then that those geniuses of all things olfactory, and after three years in the making, have bottled the solar spirit so you can take a little bit of sunshine wherever you go and whatever the weather. Smelling like cotton with which has been left out in the sun, Demeter Fragrance Library’s Sunshine cologne with its ever so subtle opening notes of vanilla is comforting and clean, the smell when you bury your face in a towel that has been lying on the beach, after you have run out of the sea and collapsed on the hot sand. break And tomorrow, when it is sunny again, there is always; Rain . break See Roullier White’s complete collection of Demeter Fragrance Library colognes here .
