Jonathan Ward, London, New Candle Collection Arrives

Image
We love this time of year at Roullier White. Whilst many of you will have had your eyes on the catwalks we have had our noses in jars collating our Autumn / Winter candle collections. We think this year’s home fragrance selection is the most sensational ever. Our first curated candle collection to hit the shelves is from creative genius Jonathan Ward. Jonathan Ward’s candles have long been a favourite with Roullier White customers, this season we have cherry picked what we believe to be the most exquisite from his sumptuous collections and included a new fragrance that is so sublime mere words alone cannot do it justice. ‘Orange and Opium’ is wickedly addictive, indeed as I type I keep picking up the unlit candle for another hit. Presented in a stunning translucent sienna crystal jar Mr Ward has definitely done it again with this heavenly blend of four different orange oils, orange rind, saffron, cumin seed pepper and cardamom. Ineke Rühland visits Roullier White

I have already mentioned that we would be having the privilege of meeting Ineke Rühland , the inspiring perfumer came to our store in East Dulwich yesterday, and it was a delight. Ineke is renowned within the perfume industry for her use of botanicals but I had no idea of the scale of her dedication.  Hearing or reading about a plant or flower, the scent of which might work in her  mind map of a new fragrance, Ineke will order the bulb or seed, grow the plant in her small garden in San Francisco and literally live with the scent before deciding whether or not it would work as an ingredient. Sitting with Ineke on a sunny Friday afternoon, we had the unique opportunity of being walked through her whole range of fragrances from A to G with a sneak preview of ‘H’ Hot House Flower, which launches at Roullier White in October. With each fragrance in turn Ineke gave us samples to smell of the key individual notes, explaining their provenance and the reason for their inclusion. We were

Smell de Jour; Chemical Bonding by Ineke

Image
Today I am wearing Chemical Bonding by Ineke. We are so excited to be meeting Ineke Rühland later today, the poetic perfumer from San Francisco, whose work with botanicals is legendary and unsurpassed. Ineke's Chemical Bonding is a citrus fragrance like no other, the top notes of five citrus oils of orange, mandarin, lemon, lime and bergamot with tea. The middle is an unusual full bodied, heirloom peony fragrance similar to a lemony rose. This is all built on a base of rich and warm amber and musk making it a citrus fragrance that really lasts. Chemical Bonding by Ineke is available in the UK from Roullier White

GreenPan, the safe non-stick pans, 25% off

Image
25% OFF WHILST STOCKS LAST   We love the GreenPan collection for its intelligent, environmentally friendly design, but mostly because it is much safer than other much more famous non-stick saucepans. In anticipation of the our new collection, we've decided to offer our customers an exclusive 25% off our remaining stock of the Vienna range. Hurry, stocks are very limit and it's first come, first serve! Please click here to see the complete collection   GreenPan is a sensational collection of non-stick cookware that uses a natural ceramic based coating called Thermolon™ rather than the conventional PTFE coating. Above 260° the PTFE coating starts to decompose and releases a multitude of nasty toxic fume. On humans, these fumes can potentially harm the respiratory tract and cause nausea and headaches, they can kill caged birds! GreenPan is completely safe. The quality of the non stick coating is obvious as soon as you use a GreenPan. The Thermolon™ coating distr

Smell de Jour; Lavender Water by Caldey Island

Image
Today I sshall be wearing Lavender Water by Caldey Island. Yesterday it was all about Agrumi by Farmacia SS. Annunziata , Farmacia SS. Annunziata was originally the apothecary owned by the Benedictine monks of Saint Nicholas, who used the herbs from their monastery garden to create cures for themselves and the local population. Much closer to home the Benedictine monks of Caldey Island in Wales have been making a Lavender Water that has been referred to as the best lavender in the World. Caldey Island's Island Lavender Water was developed by Flemish perfumer Hugo Collumbien. Luca Turin says in his book 'Perfumes: The Guide - by Luca Turin and Tania Sanchez' ; “ its gently handled linalool, lavender's 10-carbon alcohol, results in endlessly blue daylight air. It reminds me of Vermeer's use of the precious pigment ultramarine, made from lapis lazuli and traditionally reserved for the Virgin Mary's robe, on the apron of a servant pouring milk. A blessing f

Smell de Jour; Agrumi by Farmacia SS. Annunziata

Image
Today I shall be wearing Agrumi by Farmacia SS. Annunziata. Yesterday we had the delight of spending half the day with the inspiring and delightful mother and daughter duo, Ruthie and Effi Piwko, the dynamic representatives of Farmacia SS. Annunziata , one of Roullier White’s favourite fragrance brands. It is always interesting to conduct a range review, especially of a range as captivating as that of Farmacia SS. Annunziata, as it is very rare for us to revisit a collection in its entirety. Working with our customers, we tend to steer them around specific fragrance guided by the notes, which strike a resonance - easy to tell from a sudden widening of the eyes or an irrepressible smile. As we were reminded of the subtleties and complexities of the Farmacia SS. Annunziata fragrances, I was reminded of the restrained, creative genius required to make something smell so pure and yet plentiful. None of the Farmacia SS. Annunziata scents is overwhelmed with ingredients, quantity is

Smell de Jour: Hierbas de Ibiza, Agua de Colonia

Image
Today I shall be wearing: Hierbas de Ibiza Agua de Colonia. Today is my first morning back after a luxurious month in the south of France and I must say I am missing it already. Not only the ‘trinity’ of delicious bread, cheese and wine; the relaxed attitude and leisurely lunches; or the early morning dips in mountain lakes: more than anything I miss the aromas. The coffee and vanilla smells of breakfast, the dewy grass after a night of thunderstorms, the salty sea air blowing over scorching sand but perhaps the smell that will always remind me of summers in France is that of the garrigue. Driving down from the dense woods of the mountains and arriving at the garrigue is a tonic as effective as any dawn swim, as reviving as opening a bottle of smelling salts; such is the stimulating effect of the invigorating aromas on the senses. Woody  gorse and heather mix with fragrant thyme, rosemary and lavender all whipped up in a wind of pure pine. These notes of thyme, rosemary and lavend

Carthusia perfumes

Image
Legend has it that the first Cathusia perfume was created in 1380 when Queen Giovanna D'Angio arrived on the Island of Capri unannounced. With no time to acquire a suitable gift, the Father of the Carthusian Monastery gathered a lavish bouquet of the Islands most beautiful flowers. The gift was well received and at the end of her three day stay the prior went to dispose of the flowers, only to discover that the water they were placed in had taken on a beautiful fragrance. This became the first Carthusia perfume. The modern history of the company begins in 1948 when the then current friar discovered a collection of original fragrance formulas datin from the 14th century within the monastery library. With the help of an able chemist - and the permission of the pope - he created a perfumery which to this day creates Cathusia perfumes. Cathusia still create their fragrances by hand using traditional techniques with modern refinements. The fragrances are all inspired
