Matches Fashion: The Grooming Report: Fragrance Refresh: Spanish Perfumery

We are thrilled to see our friends Jimmy Boyd and Carner Barcelona featured in this wonderful round up of Spanish scents.

Perhaps it’s because it borders France, the country that’s forever been synonymous with scent, that Spain’s olfactory acumen has long been overlooked – in spite of a rich heritage stretching back over a century to the birth of the Puig fragrance empire and the formulation of Alvarez Gómez’s iconic eau de cologne. Yet today, a new batch of niche perfume houses is busy revitalising the industry from the heart of Catalonia by reinterpreting resolutely Spanish ingredients. Here are four of the best in the business.

CARNER BARCELONA

Sara Carner’s deeply personal quintet of eau de parfums is inspired by evocative memories. Take D600 (roullierwhite.com), part reference to the address of her Barcelona headquarters and part homage to her hometown’s olfactory DNA. The vibrant opening salvo of peppery citrus develops into an altogether more outré heart of cardamom and Egyptian jasmine absolute, before it settles into its addictive, wood-laden base of vetiver and Virginian cedar. Assertive and urbane in equal measure.

JIMMY BOYD

If the name seems unusual for a native of Catalonia, bear in mind that James Joseph Boyd is the cosmopolitan offspring of a Spanish mother and a Scottish father. Boyd is motivated by the multifaceted light and aromas of the Mediterranean and the cities of his native Spain. In the case of Made In Ibiza (roullierwhite.com) he has successfully channelled the island’s hedonistic pulse into an energetic citrus scent (courtesy of verbena, mandarin and bergamot), before bringing it back to earth via the calming influence of thyme.
