Sultans Of Swing & Turkish Delights! I am rather obsessed with the Ottoman Empire - it was the gateway between the East and West for over six centuries and particularly culturally rich during the rein of Suleiman The  Magnificent  in the 16th/17th century, with poetry, literature, architecture and the decorative arts pretty much unequaled in the islamic world. I also love modern day Turkey - I have been to Istanbul on a gourmet tour and was blown away with the street food which has been influenced by at least a dozen different cultures. I ate cheese and bread with honey from a sheet of newspaper in the back of the Egyptian Market and was in gourmet heaven! Turkey is also a hotbed of artistic talent and we have seen some outstanding examples of creative excellence in recent weeks. Before the silk velvet cushions and enamelware arrive I thought that I would share some really beautiful ceramics with you. Shop Now - Space Plates - From £15 The stunning 'Space' collection of hypnotic swirl plates and bowls from Bonna, in pale grey, are made in Gebze on the Asian side of Turkey. They are absolutely gorgeous with intricate, concentric circles of soft ash tones and the plates have a particularly strong glaze with a high ration of alumina oxide so they are extremely hard wearing as a well as beautiful. The plates (£15) are huge - at 30cm diameter (most dinner plates are 27cm) and the pasta bowls (£19) a generous 28cm with an extra wide rim. Remarkably affordable luxury. 'Istanbul' by Gallivant is a thoroughly modern interpretation of one of the world's most beautiful cities which sits rather precariously along a fault line! Egyptian geranium and cardamom explode from the bottle while the mystery and magic of the east is channelled via sweet myrrh, amber and musk. 'Rose Turkia' from Molinard is so pretty with the unmistakable rosewater scent of Turkish Delight! Violet petals are sprinkled across Turkish roses - the most sensual of all the roses  - and sit astride a base of guiac and cedar. Very seductive! I think I might book a holiday!
