Glorious New Scents For Mother's Day, Iconic Salad Servers
& Scented Candles In Upcycled Wine Bottles
This week I thought that I would kick-off with some sage advice on choosing scents
for our Mums.
Mother's Day is just a week away and I always buy my mother a perfume rather than flowers or chocolates as I like to think that she can enjoy the gift for six months rather then just a week! I also enjoy making the selection as I know her taste and like to find something
new to excite her.
This week saw the arrival of one of my favourite fragrance houses. I used to work with Tocca back in the naughties and my mother is a huge fan - she wore 'Florence' until the brand disappeared from British shores and will be so thrilled that it is back!
Tocca means 'touch' in Italian and the delightful bottle, based on an antique cognac decanter, and exquisite, embossed metal caps are a masterclass in how to get it right. The scents themselves were my go-to gift for family and friends and even today, some 15 years after unwrapping their scent, my nearest and dearest often ask me where they can find what became their favourite fragrance. This is the mark of a great perfume and I am delighted that we have secured the collection for Roullier White this Spring!
Shop Now - Tocca - Stella (EdP) 50ml - £68
'Stella' was my first love, not only because I could channel Stanley Kowalski and shout her name across the shop floor (I do a mean Marlon Brando!) but because this freshly ravishing fragrance is everything a summer scent should be. Witty, fun and flirtatious, this is a fantastic rendering of the blood orange with all of its juicy energy and a touch of its bitter zest. It lays across a field of white freesias and a pool of sheer and languid musk. She is a great holiday companion and will keep you smiling from sunrise to sunset, at the pool, on the beach, shopping in town and out for moonlit cocktails. She is sling-backs and a kicky skirt and I always image Gina Lollobrigida whenever I sense her presence.
Shop Now - Tocca - Florence (EdP) 50ml - £68
'Florence' is a best seller and she deserves to be. She is a slice of Parisienne sophisticate with the crisp white shirt of bergamot over a pencil skirt of Gardenia - extremely seductive and knowing. Add to this heady confection a dreamy base of blonde woods and frankly no man is safe. She is a siren's call and I'm not sure if even being strapped to a mast could prevent complete captivation!
Shop Now - Tocca - Cleopatra (EdP) 50ml - £68
What can I say about 'Cleopatra' ? Queen of the Nile and lover of both Caesar and Mark Antony, this is a tough name to live up to. However rise to the occasion this fragrance does as a remarkably modern femme fatale that uses a quality jasmine, brushed with the sparkle of grapefruit and a purr of patchouli to still the senses and bewitch all in her wake - just add a slash of eyeliner and you are good to go!
Shop Now - Tocca - Colette (EdP) 50ml - £68
I was a big fan of Colette's novels and recently rediscovered them after watching Keira Knightley's magnificent portrayal. This feisty feminist defied convention and her extraordinary talent and drive ensured that she became known as the greatest female writer of her generation and was nominated for the Nobel prize for literature. It was her strong and rebellious spirit that raised 'Colette' to iconic status and here the eponymous fragrance uses a spicy glamour to evoke our heroine! A piquant lily sits astride a warm and beguiling sandalwood and the whole is subsumed in a cloud of incense. This is a mysterious, intriguing scent with a vital and intelligent allure.
Shop Now - Tocca - Giulietta (EdP) 50ml - £68
Giulietta Masina was a fantastic Italian actress and the great love of legendary Film Director Frederico Fellini. She starred in 'La Strada' in 1954 for which she won Best Actress at Cannes and the film, inspired by the actresses 'humanity' according to her husband,  won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film in that year. 'Giulietta' was a woman of charm and charisma and her acting has a natural, nuanced quality that is reflected in Tocca's perfume. The innocence of lily of the valley is teamed with the natural beauty of Bulgarian roses and these sweet florals are grounded by a base of cedarwood that suggests a measured and serious facet to a charming personality. Although inspired by passionate romance, this is the scent of a vital and sophisticated woman of complex character.
The concept here is that each scent in the Tocca range represents a different facet of the same woman, so the collection forms a capsule olfactory wardrobe to be donned according to mood and occasion. Ravishing, romantic, adventurous and beguiling by degree I can think of no better way to spoil our mothers!
Buy Now - Brass Salad Servers Set of 2 - £25
In an attempt to restore my waistline to its pre-winter dimensions I am turning to salad! I have probably the finest collection of salad bowls in London however I need something equally smart on the server front to live up to them. I found these beauties, made from brass-coated steel, in Denmark and I think that they are stunning. Ultra-modern they could have been designed in the 1960's or yesterday and they look impossibly chic in electric/candle light and will positively glow when the sunnier evenings arrive. Plated products should not be placed in a dishwasher as the abrasive action wears at  the surface and these deserve a little TLC however a quick rinse and wipe is hardly hard labour!
Shop Now - Wax + Wick Candles - From £18
I have been searching for a new collection to add to our home fragrance offer for months and it is surprising, given that this is an over-subscribed milieu, just how disappointing most brands are. Either the packaging is generic or the fragrances dull and weak so I was delighted to discover Wax & Wick, a new British with a clever twist. The first thing to capture my attention is that the glass flacons are made from up-cycled wine bottles sourced in the UK
(in either green or clear glass), the wax is 100% soy so no nasties or palm oil and they are made locally so the carbon footprint is minimal. The scents are clever with familiar scents in unique combinations - I adore the Grapefruit & Sage, Lavander & Bay and Almond & Green Tea. Lastly and by no means least is that I expected them to be priced at around £35 however the collection starts at £18, so this is a beautiful, vegan-friendly, ecologically responsible purchase for under £20. Genius!
I have managed to fracture a rib this week by slipping on the plastic covering my stairs while the decorators are doing their thing! Thus I am staying in London this w/e and hopefully being ministered to by the Good Dr who is being rather mean and threatening to get me a bell to ring like an elderly dowager! I shall attempt to rise, or rather sink, to the occasion and channel my inner, imperious Maggie Smith - be careful what you wish for Dr!
Have a lovely w/e and mind how you go....... now where did I put that ear trumpet?
