Rainbow High Glassware - A Kiss And A Coddle,
The Sherpa Of Scent On The Queen Of Seduction - Tuberose!

Good Morning!!

What a week it has been - just as my central heating had decided that it was time to turn itself back on, the thermometer soared to 29 degrees and summer was back! It has been absolutely glorious - although The Lovely Lene and myself sweltered at a Tradeshow on the hottest day of the week. Central London in 30 degrees is not very pleasant!

Our final walk around Knole at the W/E was roasting, and the deer sensibly refused to play-ball and stayed hidden under the trees in the shade.

Fortunately, our suppliers have been very kind and placed my orders for woollen scarves and throws on hold - this week was certainly not the time to launch them!

My family went to look at our cottage on Sunday and fortunately my mother approves (from the outside at least!), although she is slightly bemused by the "lack of pavements". I tried explaining that small villages rarely have pavements - part of the charm I think - but that did not quite cut it! I  shall have to get the red carpet out of the mothballs!

Shop Now - Urban Apothecary - Scented Candle Coconut Grove - £35.00
Shop Now - Benamôr - Moisturising Hand Cream - Rose Amélie - £8.00

So lovely to see all of my In-Laws on Saturday - weather in Eastbourne was super and I bought Ma-In-Law the 'Coconut Grove' scented candle, which is potent and smells like exotic travel (lime and coconuts), and a rose-scented hand-cream, so that she is surrounded by lovely scents at all times!

My sister-in-law has moved to Portland and we received an invitation to visit 'before the weather turns', so my diary is quite full for the next 6 weeks. I have to squeeze in a trip to France as my garden looks like this - two years of COVID- related neglect, it's not pretty and it had just been freshly gravelled and planted with formal beds, so should look the picture on the left- the irony! Actually, I am quite calm about it as one watches the news and just feels so grateful - a few(!!) weeds are not the end of the world! I watched the 9/11 documentary for the anniversary and felt so overwhelmed, even twenty years on!

Shop Now - Rainbow Glassware - From £5.50

At the store, we have been super-busy and have taken delivery of some magnificent glassware from a new designer in France. I splurged on wine glassed and classic, curved and contemporary tumblers in rainbow hues. I like coloured glasses, I think that they brighten a dining table and are very useful when entertaining as one can always find one's own glass again!

We also have some lovely coupes, etched with wreaths around the rim - very chic indeed!

Shop Now - Garland Etched Champagne Coupe - £12.00
Shop Now - Egg Coddler Plate - £14.50

I was speaking to the designer of our Egg Coddler this week and he sent me this picture taken from his terrace in the South Of France 2 weeks ago. The entire horizon is glowing from forest fires and they came dangerously close! You see what I mean about being grateful!

Speaking of the coddlers, Jois (the designer) has created a special plate for his design so that it fits neatly into a dipped well which holds it in place while one eats. The plate itself can then be filled with bread soldiers to dip into the coddler and lovely chutneys. It is a stylish, yet practical addition and I have nabbed two for myself and the GD as we just love to coddle!

Shop Now - Histoires de Parfums - Tuberose 2 Virginale (EdP) 60ml - £95.00

Our Perfume adventure is taking a decidedly erotic turn this week as we explore
The Tuberose!

This innocent-looking, delicate white flower is, in fact, the most carnal in the perfume panoply! Indeed, in India where the blooms are grown, only married woman are allowed to harvest it as the scent is so arousing!

The flower probably originated in Mexico and records show that it was used by the Aztecs, who called it 'Bone Flower' due its white colour.

One of the reasons that the Tuberose is associated with seduction is that it tends to flower at night. The other is the scent itself; soft, urgent, creamy and suggestive, it is a very big scent for such a tiny bloom.

To best describe its different facets, we need only turn to our Tuberose offering from Histoires de Parfums. We carry three different tuberose scents from this wonderful Parisian House and this is because they each highlight a very different aspect of the fragrance.

Firstly, we have 'Tuberose 2 Virginale' which, as the name suggests, explores with more innocent aspects of the flower. Here it is blended with other exotic flora (gardenia, jasmine, frangipani and tiari) at the heart, but freshened at the top with tangerine and cherry. Although far from a 'chaste' fragrance, this realisation is soft, ethereal and very pretty indeed.

Shop Now - Histoires de Parfums - Tuberose 1 (EdP) 60ml £95.00

Gerald Ghislain created Histoires de Parfum's 'Tuberose 1 Capricious' in recognition of the super diva: the beautiful, demanding starlet whose scent treads the line between natural and sophisticated. In this perfume, the tuberose note is cloaked in saffron and ylang-ylang and supplemented by leathery cocoa base notes. This is a smooth, and well-rounded powdery fragrance that is as mysterious as it is magical.

Shop Now - Histoires de Parfums - Tuberose 3 Animale (EdP) 60ml - £95.00

Finally we have 'Tuberose 3 Animale' an utterly and gloriously wanton realisation, with the most bewitching aspects of the blossom magnified in a perfume that is positively indecent! Immortelle flower (a favourite of mine), kumquat, prune and blond tobacco are her partners in crime, but she cavorts and shimmies above them, knowing that she is impossible to resist!

Shop Now - Nasomatto - Narcotic V (EdE) 30ml - £124.00

'Narcotic V' from Nassomato explores the addictive nature of Tuberose - and it really is! White blossoms, a hint of mint, then lily and orange blossom form the chorus, but the star of the show is a highly feminine, intoxicating tuberose that really heightens the senses and is increasingly moreish.

Shop Now - Ruth Mastenbroek - Amorosa (EdP) 30ml - £70.00

Ruth Mastenbroek's 'Amorosa' is less of a diva and more of a worldly sophisticate. The title means 'lover' when translated from Italian and this is the seductive scent of a woman in love with life. Launched in 2012, this exceptional floral/aquatic fragrance draws its inspiration from the hills of Italy and the natural beauty of the landscape. Sparkling and fruity with watermelon and violet leaf at the opening, Amorosa dries down to reveal a sensual base of warming amber, strident vetiver, and classic patchouli.

Shop Now - Tocca - Cleopatra (EdP) 50ml - £68.00

'Cleopatra' is quite a name to live up to - Queen, Politician, Seductress - but Tocca's stunningly beautiful realisation manages to be both regal and ravishing at the same time! A remarkably modern femme fatale that uses a quality jasmine, brushed with the sparkle of grapefruit and a purr of patchouli to still the senses and bewitch all in her wake - just add a slash of eyeliner and you are good to go!

Shop Now - Ramon Monegal - Kiss My Name (EdP) 50ml - £130.00

And finally, 'Kiss My Name' from Ramon Monegal! If there is a better name for a fragrance I have not heard it and here I think that we should let Ramon speak for himself!

"My revenge. At the beginning of my training, the first classic accord I had to learn and replicate, without much luck, was the legendary floral tuberose, with jasmine and orange blossom. I've now been able to regain that satisfying experience and to interpret the myth, reformulating the accord fragrance with my learned language." Key notes include Indian tuberose absolute, iris on cedarwood, Egyptian jasmine absolute, Tunisian neroli and Tolu balsam. He has certainly delivered in style and this 'Kiss' is deep and passionate!

I took the GD to the theatre last night for the first time since the pandemic struck. The play, 'Constellations', was fantastic, and we went for dinner at the restaurant where we met (the utterly scrumptious 'The Gate' in Marylebone) with some friends. It did feel strange to be among so many at the theatre, but the play was mesmerising, so we soon forgot all about it! Delighted to get back a little of our old life!

Today we are driving down to 'Ferring' - a lovely spot on the West Sussex Coast if you are passing - as our friend, Gentleman Simon, is celebrating a HUGE, milestone birthday and has hired an enormous house on the beach (with pool) for us to play in! Then it's back to London for one of my favourite Trade Exhibitions, where I hope to unearth some new talent! Always exciting as one simply never knows!

Wishing you all a wonderful, warm w/e,

Michael x
